Ah Cheng Ah!

Ah Cheng Laksa has been around for ages but I have never been. One evening my partner had to work late. He knew I would not be pleased because this auntie likes to go home early.

And he knew his grumpy lady would be appeased by food. Blame that on my late grandmother who used to bribe me with kuehs and such. Hah!

So he suggested asam laksa at Ah Cheng Laksa@The Starling

Since we are both big eaters, one bowl of asam laksa each was not enough.

We got a Chai Kueh to share.

I loved this. Crammed full of chives and very nice to eat with the chili sauce. The skin was very fragile and tore easily.

We also got ourselves a lobak. Made with chicken of course.

It was surprisingly good. The taste is spot on.

Of course this was the star of the show. Perhaps we should not compare this to Penang Asam Laksa

I suggested we add fish which I subsequently felt was not necessary as there was already adequate fish in the laksa gravy.

We had longan for drinks and my partner said it was very good. Not too sweet.

I guess we would come here again when we crave for asam laksa.

  1. Oh Phong Hong, I am drooling over the laksa, etc. I just had dinner and I feel like eating laksa now! Ha ha! The chai kueh and lobak look so good. I can see a big piece of fish in your bowl of laksa!

  3. I dare to say that Ah Cheng laksa is better than many laksa stalls in Penang. This Ah Cheng is a Melaka styled if not mistaken but Penang & Melaka are both Nyonya heavens.
You were smart not to add fish as I made the mistake. It tasted too much fish, killing the laksa oomph and I felt like a bloated cat for next 2 days purring and burping out smelly fish.

    1. Really? I thought it was not as good as the real Penang laksa. I added fish lah and realised I should not have. LOL! You are so funny :D :D :D

  4. wah they sell chai kueh and lobak too? or only at the starling stall? i like to add fish too because i like to eat a big piece of fish instead of bits and pieces of fish floating around in the soup. after reading this i want to go eat ah cheng assam laksa again, hehehe.

  5. If judging by the looks, the laksa looks like the real deal (not like I am a good judge anyway), the lobak looks... meh... doesn't look nice and warm and crispy... :/

  6. This Ah Cheng Laksa I believe is a franchise as it's everywhere but I've not tried as no-one in my family likes assam laksa except me. I see they've opened one in Starling too. I love chai kueh too especially the one with sengkuang. These ones are not as pretty looking though as the one I found and bought from my neighbourhood pasar malam...hehe! ;)

    1. LOL! Yes, this chai kueh is not as pretty as the one you had. In fact the skin breaks when I try to lift it up :(

  8. i think i've tried ah cheng once or twice in some other mall - they're one of those brands we take for granted, i guess, since they're in a bunch of malls and they've been around for so long. but they must be doing things right, since they're still opening new branches! :D i studied in penang for three years, and for the first two years, i didn't eat asam laksa cos i don't really like sourish food ... but i started eating it in my final year and liked it! as long as the fish isn't too fishy, heheh :D

    1. You are right, they are practically everywhere! I have always loved asam laksa and used to get my fix at one coffee shop in SS2 where they give you "hae koh" which gives a kick to the laksa :D

    1. It is minced meat rolled inside beancurd skin and then deep fried. I think you know it but in another name.

    1. Yes, it's worth a try. The laksa is not bad, though not as good as true blue Penang asam laksa.

  12. The name Ah Cheng reminds me of a song "Ah Cheng Bay Lo Ti" (Unchained Melody) LOL!!! For one thing, I would say everything looks very clean. Nice!

Wahhh....siap ada isi ikan seketul lagi tu. Haruslah ada makanan sampingan LL, laksa ni kenyang sekejap je, kuah je yg banyak hihi...
